Stereotactic Gamma Knife radiosurgery: Past, present and future

Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (GKSRS) has been the gold standard since its inception in the late 1950s. The latest GKSRS Esprit system has powerfully showcased its unique treatment delivery paradigms, as well as enhanced technical capabilities and integrated workflow in supporting both frame-based single-fraction and mask-based hypofractionated treatments. This paper discusses the past, present and future of GKSRS. In summary, we consider the developments of GKSRS over the past 30 years a stunning success. GKSRS has been a constant source of inspiration for stereotactic brain radiosurgery and body radiotherapy. Continuing growth is expected in the years to come to benefit many patients worldwide.
